Compositionally, Phillips works with combining multiple
highly-differentiated sound worlds, having them interact through juxtaposition,
inter-penetration, and convolution. The resulting synthesis of sounds
is sometimes humorous and often mysterious or spiritual. His musical
projects often involve collaborations with performers, dancers, computer
artists, and involve the use of computer technology.
Recent
collaborations include works for percussionist Patti Cudd and violinist
Mark Menzies. Nathaniel Phillips received his Ph.D. from the University
of California at San Diego where he studied with Pulitzer Prize winning
composer Roger Reynolds. He also studied with Robert Hall Lewis at the
Peabody Conservatory and Peter Slowik at the Northwestern School of
Music.
Awards and honors include the Ada Ardens Morowitz
award for outstanding compositional achievement, the Award for Excellence
in Composition from the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers,
grants from the American Music Center and the Peabody Conservatory,
and scholarships to attend the Banff Centre, the Fountainebleau Academy
of Music, and the Darmstadt International Music Festival.
Nathan also performs on Viola and other instruments. Recently he has
