Piece for Listener
The Piece for Listener is a music performance piece for a single person. Listening stations are marked in a sequence at an architectural performance site - each with a specific length of listening time. The performer is invited to visit the stations by standing on a circular mark on the floor facing in the suggested direction, and open her or his ears to the surrounding sound field. Signs at each station guide the performer to the next station. A full score allows to overview of the entire path. Re-visiting the stations at different times of the day or week is recommended.

CalArts 2000/2001
Like a subconscious layer, all activity at the Californian Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA, is superimposed by ambient sounds flooding the building and it's surrounding campus. Next to those generated by the presence of people and their cars, and those by other living beings such birds, it is the infrastructure for air conditioning with its sometimes unpredictable behaviors, counterpointed by the 60Hz hums of neon lights and invisible transformers. After several weeks of research, I had found 14 listening spots yielding a worthwile orchestration. I wrote down the times I felt it was necessary to listen there in order to understand the process that was audible. The piece was installed from December 2000 to April 2001.

The score is available in two formats:

17 x 11 inches (recommended), or 11 x 8.5 inches.

The score is a collaboration
with photographer/designer Andreas Freitag.
