Twice Removed
for flute and electronics
PROGRAM NOTE
The electronic sounds in Twice Removed are comprised entirely of flute samples recorded with the performer Sarah Frisof. While writing the piece, I attempted to create a continuum of sound that bridges the aural gap between the flute and the electronics. Occasionally, the use of extended flute techniques and carefully crafted computer events hinder the listener's ability to distinguish the source of sound. Other sections of the piece utilize the continuum's extremes i.e., first, electronic sounds made from collages of flute samples which are impossible to realize with a performer and second, delicate, ethereal flute textures that cannot be accurately represented in electronic media because they are inextricably linked to the drama of live performance. | [11] |
