string quartet no. 1 for string quartet

program notes

String Quartet no. 1 marks a time when I turned away from melody-centric music and found new approaches to organizing my compositional thinking. I envision the piece as a set of sonic objects and environments which oscillate between phenomenological and musical settings. I use these words ┠music and phenomenon ┠not because I believe they are easily defined or parsed; but because, through attempting to establish a space connecting them, I hope that music will blossom out of sound; that musical passages will arise from process; and that music will be discovered rather than asserted.
