TITLE: Simple Harmonic Motion COMPOSER: Daniel Koppelman DATE: 1991 DURATION: ca. 5:30 ADDRESS: 1508 North Drive; Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS (SCORE, PERFORMER, ETC.): No score. Live improvised performance by two disklavier players, one on the keyboard and the other "inside the piano." ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT (SYNTHESIZERS, PATCHES, ETC.): Korg Wavestation. Patches are available from the composer in Galaxy format. SETUP (EQUIPMENT ARRANGEMENT, ACOUSTICS, LIGHTING, ETC.): your good judgement. PROGRAM NOTE: The work contains both composed and improvised elements: certain pitch materials (most notably a basic 8-note cell), all the synthesizer patches, and the pacing of major events are fixed; the computer at times chooses randomly from among given materials; the keyboardist alternately improvises around the basic cell and responds freely to the computer's output; and the inside player improvises freely throughout (using fingers, fingernails, and metal beaters directly on the strings and frame.) Multiple performances will therefore resemble each other in pitch-class content, sonic design, and overall architecture while remaining distinctive in surface detail.
